HOLLYWOOD’S MAGICAL ISLAND-CATALINA

Through the remarkable eye of first time film director, Greg Reitman, we get a first hand glimpse of The Magic Isle. While exploring historical, social, and environmental changes, the film captures the mystical splendors, natural beauty and romance of Santa Catalina Island. Using a mix of rare 16mm, archival film and old black and white stills, inter-cut with interviews of islanders, historians and celebrities; the viewer is taken on a journey during America’s golden era. It begins with the acquisition of the Santa Catalina Island Company in 1919 led by William Wrigley, Jr. He set a course for Catalina’s future in the world of art, sports, music and entertainment that was unmatched in US history even through present day. The film documents architectural achievements, many first of a kind buildings and innovations that transformed Catalina from a simple island into a modern day state-of-the-art playground. The film highlights many of the individuals including stars of the Big Band Era, Marilyn Monroe, and the island’s role as Hollywood’s secret playground for the stars. The island even played a role in helping to elect a President. We witness the island’s tragedy and heartache – deftly captured in the film with heartfelt interviews and a score that tugs at the emotions. Utilizing interviews with Jean-Michel Cousteau, heirs of the Wrigley family, residents and visitors of the island; we learn of William Wrigley, Jr’s dream of preserving the island’s natural beauty as well as providing a magical place for all to enjoy. The film concludes with Art Good Jazz Trax, Fender’s Catalina Island Blues Festival, and a visual kaleidoscope of modern day Catalina Island as an ecological paradise highlighting the revival of the island as a place of leisure and entertainment.

LINCOLN MAYORGA - pianist, conductor, composer

LINCOLN MAYORGA

While many concert artists are described as "versatile", Lincoln Mayorga is the personification of the word. Few pianists enjoy concurrent successes in the traditional concert world and in the field of popular music and jazz. Mr. Mayorga is that rare performer who is greatly admired in both.

The descendent of a pianistic line which began with Beethoven and continued through Carl Czerny, Leschetizky, Arthur Schnabel and his own teacher, Aube Tzerko, Mr. Mayorga balanced his traditional training with the contemporary teachings of Leonard Shure and Gyorgy Sandor.

His performances include collaborations with such artists as Arnold Steinhardt, Michael Tilson Thomas, Richard Stolzman, Gerard Schwarz, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, among others. During the past several seasons, his concert tours have taken him to Russia, Europe and over 200 cities in North America. In 1988, the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra engaged him as soloist in their first concert devoted entirely to American music - from which the Gershwin selections were released as "A Gershwin Celebration," on Sheffield Lab (10044-2)

Lincoln Mayorga's talents are widely recognized in Hollywood where he was staff pianist for Walt Disney Studios, and performed on the soundtracks of "The Competition," "The Rose," "Harold and Maude," "Splash" and many other films, as well as such television programs as "Highway to Heaven." "Little House on the Prairie" and "Dallas." His composing credits include background scores for the hit series "Fame." In the pop music field, he has accompanied and written arrangements for Barbra Streisand, Johnny Mathis, Vikki Carr, Andy Williams, Mel Torme and Quincy Jones.

During recent seasons, Mr. Mayorga has appeared in hundreds of recitals across the U.S. as well as in concerto performances, including such diverse repertoire as the Beethoven "Triple" and Bolling's "Suite for Chamber Orchestra and Jazz Piano Trio," of which he gave the West Coast premiere. The latest of his many recording projects include the complete Chopin Preludes and works by Brahms and Prokofiev (Sheffield Lab 10505-2). He has also recently completed recordings of songs by Irving Berlin, featuring Margie Gibson (Sheffield Lab 10036-2) and songs by George Gershwin and Jerome Kern, with soprano Marni Nixon (Reference Recordings). Mr. Mayorga was recently featured as a guest on "Piano Jazz," Marion McPartland's popular radio show on NPR.

ENOCH TRAIN

ENOCH TRAIN

Enoch Train
Eight Musicians
Ninety Instruments
Hundreds of Years of Folk Hymn Heritage
Enoch Train is what happens when America's religious folk culture throws a party and the whole world comes to dance. Suddenly the hymn tunes and children's songs we learned in church show up in dirndls, kimonos, dashikis and kaftans and we wonder: "Are our old, familiar neighbors going through a midlife crisis or did we just never really know them"?

Imagine Mannheim Steamroller and the Chieftans combining to play "A Mighty Fortress". What if Bela Fleck and Tito Puente played "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes" or if Chet Atkins and Ravi Shankar joined forces on "I Saw Three Ships"? Now you begin to understand the diversity of Enoch Train's musical palette: a neon rainbow of acoustic music with all the energy of a thunderstorm.

Truly American folk music embodies the principles of Americanism: Yankee ingenuity, creativity, tolerance, acceptance of diversity, appreciation for every positive contribution, and gratitude for this blessed land. Enoch Train plays Grateful folk, playing the melodies America's first immigrants brought with them, principally folk hymns and children's songs, but utilizing instruments and styles from all over the world.

Besides the traditional guitar, fiddle, bass, mandolin and harmonica Enoch Train adds accordion, woodwinds, and drums, and then welcomes charango, quena and zampona, dan tranh, okonkolo and bata, kalimba and barafon, tamburitza and bandurrion, bodhran, clarinoboe and xaphoon, and many others from the diverse cultures that have helped to make America what it is today.

Testimonial: I have worked full time at the CAM-PLEX Heritage Center since 1995. In that time I have seen many artists and residencies. The Standards and the work they did in our school system was second to none.
